Ballon d’Or
Ballon d’Or is known as the most prestigious individual award sought after by a football player.
It has been awarded since 1956, and it was once merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year and was known as the FIFA Ballon d’Or for some time, but it was then again renamed the Ballon d’Or award. The award is given to the player who has performed the most consistently and had been the most prolific in their games in the previous year. This award is only given to the best player who performed the best last year in terms of individual success, and the award is given according to votes made by the club, national team coaches, and players all around the world, making the award a global prize when all players of all origin were eligible of the prize. Lionel Messi is the current holder of the Ballon d’Or and is the only player who has won the most Ballon d’Ors, with six wins under his belt. This season was, as always, a fascinating season for football, and there were extraordinary performances everywhere. Here is our list of who should win the Ballon d’Or this year.
ERLING HAALAND
Erling Haaland is one of those players who took the whole world by storm with his performances this year. At the age of 20, he has shown how proficient he is in front of goals. He scored 28 goals for his previous club RB Salzburg in the Bundesliga and then switched to Borussia Dortmund in January. The young footballer didn’t stop his run there as well, as he scored 16 goals out of 18 games with Borussia Dortmund last season, and this season he has already scored 11 goals in 11 matches. Haaland is one of the best young players in the football world and is a front runner to win the Ballon d’Or if he can help his team lift some silverware.
JORGINHO
Jorginho had a ‘wild’ year as he has won two of the most prestigious awards ever wanted by a footballer-the Champions League and the UEFA Euro Cup. Jorginho played a crucial role for his national team, Italy, in their conquest for continental glory and ended up winning the final as he scored one of the penalties needed to win the cup. A few weeks before that, he had won the Champions League with Chelsea as he played an important role there. If the award is given on individual accolades, then there may be few players who did better than Jorginho this year.
LIONEL MESSI
Lionel Messi, arguably one of the greatest players of all-time in sports history, also did terrific this year, leading his national team to international glory after a 28-year wait since they last won a major international trophy. Lionel Messi played a pivotal part in their conquest, scoring four goals in the competition and winning the Player of the Tournament award. At the club level, he also played the best in his league, scoring 38 goals and assisting 14 goals in 48 games which are incredible at this level of football. He also secured his team, FC Barcelona, the Copa Del Rey, and won the golden boot for most goals in the competition, La Liga.
